WINE. VESUVIO DOC
Born at the slopes of the most famous volcano in the world, Mt. Vesuvius and bearing its name, the Vesuvius DOC, was officially recognized in 1983, and is nowadays sold in 3 different varieties: white, red and rosè. It is made in the territory of the Vesuvius national park, and in the districts of Boscotrecase, Trecase and San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, in some areas of Ottaviano, San Giuseppe Vesuviano, Terzigno, Boscoreale, Torre Annunziata, Torre del Greco, Ercolano, Portici, Cercola, Pollena Trocchia, Sant’Anastasia and Somma Vesuviana. The vineyards are grown at about 300 metres altitude . For the white variety Coda di Volpe or Caprettone grape is used, often adding Verdesca, Falangina and Greco. For the red, producers use Piedirosso grape, and sometimes Sciascinoso o Aglianico. Eight different varieties of wine are produced in these local tendril: The Vesuvius, white, red and rosè and the Lacryma Christi, white, red and rosè, offered in liqueur and in sparkling. The minimum alcohol content is 10.5 % for the white 10% for the red and rosè ones. If the DOC wine goes over the 12% alcohol content it is named Lacryma Christi. According to legend, the origin of the name of this world famous wine is derived as follows: God recognized the gulf of Naples as the strip of sky where Lucifer had fallen as he went to hell, here at this point he cried and where his divine tears fell, now grow the vineyards of the Lacryma Christi.
